I'm really bummed out right now. In the past few weeks I have shelled out a lot of money for repairs at a rental. First there was the matter of having to install a new water heater (I don't know how to do that and neither does the hub). Then, since there was a plumber there anyway, we had him take care of two leaking faucets. Involved in this whole scenario with the water heater there was an electrical problem tripping breakers and we had to call out an electrician. Thankfully that part didn't cost us anything because I have the inside wiring covered under a cheap insurance deal through the electric company. As if all that were not enough, during this whole process it was discovered that there was a leak in a hot water pipe under the house. Think $$$$$. We can't do something that big by ourselves, either. The plumber had to take up a tile floor and drill into the concrete below. He will be going back on Friday to put the floor back. And that should be the end, right? Huh. Now the tenant calls and says there is a water spot on the bathroom ceiling. Well, at least I'm reasonably sure it is not a roof leak. That roof is not very old and the work and materials were top-notch. I'm pretty sure I know what it is because of location and timing. It sounds to me as if the vent stack on the roof filled up with water during the torrential downpours we have had here for the past few days. There is either a leak around the seal or the pipe itself is leaking somewhere above the ceiling line. Of course, just knowing what it probably is does not mean we can fix this ourselves, either. We are handy, but there are some things we just don't do. We don't screw around with electricity and we keep our asses off the roof. I need somebody to go up there, fix the problem and install a proper rain cap without blocking the vent. Think more $$$$$. I feel like crying. If nothing else, at least the tenants are not a bunch of slobs who would ignore things like leaks and let my house rot, costing much more in the end. You would be surprised how many tenants do things like that.
I have set up temporary office in the kitchen. It's been there since Tuesday morning. I need to get organized, but now I'm depressed. I just need a break. So does my poor husband. We just need shit to quit going wrong for a while. We need for people not to get sick, not need dental appointments, not need as many rides to go places and we need shit to STOP BREAKING. We're getting tired and dispirited from the strain of it all and we're having trouble keeping up. We need a break.

It definitely sounds like you need a break. You are right - when it rains, it pours. But eventually the sun comes out.
ReplyDeleteYou do need a break. That is a lot going on. Money issues really suck. I am so sorry you that you are going through this stress.
