I had a run-in yesterday evening with a religious proselytizer right in my own driveway. And yes, I got mean and ugly (thank you, Rambo). The whole thing triggered me and really threatened to escalate some shit that has already been bothering me around that aspect of the abuse. I thought about blogging the thing. I know many who read here understand abuse issues, but as far as I know, I don't have many atheist readers. And just as Christians go to one another with their troubles, it is often best for me to do the same. So I reached out to my atheist community and the response was quick, warm and supportive. Due to the very nature of these people, it was also very grounding in a way that did not minimize the underlying issue. And here I sit, free of the flashback monster even after a major triggering event. I hope it holds. New Guy is on vacation this week, but I speak with Old Guy Wednesday. Also, I have my husband, the atheist community, the lovely people who respond to this blog, and for right now, I am fairly well able to embrace reality and shake my fist at the bullshit that caused the bullshit.
On a happier note, I bought steaks, sweet potatoes, corn on the cob and watermelon to enjoy with the family for Monday. Sure, I've got a wee bit of splainin' to do in regard to the driveway incident, but I have other things, too. (Maybe I should put a sign in my yard warning those who believe they have a message to share? Do you think 'Proselytizers Will Be Hexed' is a bit too heavy? Maybe not if you consider what I would REALLY like to post - 'Proselytizers Will Be Shot' - so maybe hexed is not too heavy. Of course, *I* don't believe in hexes, but they are likely to. Which kind of cracks me up.)

I had to put up a sign saying "Day Sleeper, Do Not Disturb" because before I did that the Jehovah's Witnesses kept on a-knockin' when I was trying to get my "beauty" sleep.
ReplyDeleteHi, Lily. Yeah, I can't stand the thing where people actually come to the door, either. I tend to get even uglier in that instance. I finally removed my doorbell at the last house because apparently those freaks either can't read, or they think they can do whatever the hell they want and I was ready to get physically violent. This thing that happened last night was different, though. In a really creepy way. They were driving down the street and slowed down when they saw me walking down my driveway. Like they were looking for someone to prey upon. Total strangers imagined they had the right (duty) to accost me on my own property and invade it with their putrid religion. Not a good thing for a religion-hating agoraphobic, so I lighted right into them right there in the open, screamed at them to go away and take their disease with them, and then I slammed my car door and peeled out.
ReplyDeleteAs a Christian, I don't like proselytizers either. If they are Christian, they try to get me to go to their church. I also do not agree with the Mormon or Jehovah churches.
ReplyDeleteI'm embarrassed when the proselytizers are Christian especially standing on street corners yelling...it generally doesn't do any good, but make them look crazy.
I actually do not respond to the doorbell or knocking when I am home unless I know the person or am expecting something in the mail. I also use my peep hole. Well, dressed and at times coming in twos is a give away and I definitely will not open the door.
If I am "blind sided" outside, I tell them that I am busy and do not have any time.
I'm sorry that this happened and that you were triggered. The person that you encountered would scare me and I'd feel like I'm being "targeted."
Be well,
CC
Hi, Clueless. Though I understand your feelings, I'm sorry you feel embarrassed when the proselytizers are Christian. Proselytizers are responsible for their own behavior. Disrespectful Christians are not your responsibility because you are not one of them. Thank you for sharing your similar experience here.
ReplyDeleteI find that *annoying* too! The last time the JWs came knocking on my door I told them I was in need of a demonoligist, not a watchtower magazine. YOU CAN'T SAVE ME! They haven't been back...
ReplyDeleteThank you Rambo!
Yeah, I bet PAG has alot of fun with stuff like that. Rock on!!
ReplyDeleteI never really thought of an atheist community existing. I guess I dont belong to any community, christian or atheist.
ReplyDeleteI always turn the door knockers away - my first motivation is because as a kid my parents used to always invite them in and convert them to catholicism. They used to talk for hours. I remember with one particular Mormon visit the whole family had to kneel on the floor holding hands in a circle with these Mormons. I never really got why.
Now I dont want to waste my time with them.
xx.
They are a nuisance, Kahless, and I don't want to waste time with them, either. That's why I only used about 30 seconds to scare them half to death so they would leave.
ReplyDeleteYeah, atheists have organised so that we can protect our constitutional rights lest the religious nuts take them all away. We are here whether they like it or not and we will fight to the death to ensure the separation of church and state. And some of us will go after the freaks who trespass on private property even if it is considered 'impolite' to do so. I think it is impolite to trespass AND to proselytize.
personally I think you should go with 'shot' if you're in the US. Those religious people get all excited about witches, and not in a good way.
