We all know the real estate market has gone right down the crapper, right? Real estate agents are dropping like flies. Since I have not been working for so long, this has not cost me anything. But now... I got a call from my broker. He is moving his office into his home and going sole proprietor in a last ditch effort to save the biz from going under. This means I will have to move my license. Where will I park that thing in a climate like this one? I can't send it back to Tallahassee. I just can't. It has never been inactive. I don't think I want to give up my license. It is my last connection to... what I once was and might be again.
Want to hear the irony? There was a time when I would not have needed a broker to hold my license. I WAS the broker. Yes, that's right, the basket case had her own brokerage. I had to choose, though. My husband wasn't handling things well in the house, the kids were small, and I had my anxiety problems. It started getting pretty bad, and Florida, backwoods armpit that it can sometimes seem, did not yet recognize online continuing education. Yeah. I voluntarily demoted myself from broker back to salesperson and folded my business because of a chaotically messy house and a raging case of agoraphobia. I was literally unable to travel to get the required credits, and I was overwhelmed just trying to keep my head above water at home. Pay cut = 50%. AND I had to refinance the house to pull that off. Nice, eh?
WTF am I going to do now?

Wouldn't a larger agency allow you to park the license as long as, if you sold anything or even bought/sold real estate for yourself, they got a small commission? It wouldn't cost them anything and yet they might stand to gain a bit.
ReplyDeleteI dont know.
ReplyDeleteSorry my friend.
Even the larger agencies are folding here, Tamara. The ones who are left want a lot of fees whether the agent conducts business or not. Even if I could find a situation that was suitable financially, I need a specific kind of work environment in case I run into *my problems* while working.
ReplyDeleteI've got it sorted, K. I'm thinking I am a lucky person in some ways.
That is too bad. My husband was a realtor on Maui and when we moved to Oregon he was able to get his license as a sole proprietor and so even though he is not currently working as a realtor he can keep his license active. He could not do that so easily on Maui, he had to be under a broker. This screwed up economy is effecting people in so many different ways. It is very sad.
ReplyDeleteIt sure is, Tamara. It's awful for those who are losing things that cannot be easily replaced. My own broker has pared down everything just to make sure the place survives. It's just him, and one other agent who works from his own home. Now, there is also me, even though I still won't be working right now. He's keeping my license under his without the corporation and it will still be an active status! I'm so lucky. I'm glad your husband gets to keep his, too.
