Sometimes healing looks like a lady spending the evening on the sofa buried under the amazing red-golden fluff of two 80 pound lapdogs. She protects their right to keep their cojones and they protect her from the terror of cold weather. I would have taken a pic, but I was the lady under the blanket of doggies and together they outweigh me and... no way did I want them to get down in any case.

  2. We have female black lab and are under the same pressure as you are to get her 'fixed' even though she never allowed in public without one of us. We were told about toxic womb syndrome, cancer etc.
We don't have any plans to breed from her but don't wish her to have an operation just because of other careless owners. Did you come across information to indicate that getting her womb removed is as necessary as having your gentlemen's personal jewels removed? Thanks, katie

  3. Hi, Katie. I posted a link in my sidebar for you and your lady. It is listed as Spay and Neuter information in Favorite Helpful Places and seems to be a good summary of much of the research I encountered. It covers benefits AND risks (and I don't know about your vet, but ours did not mention any risks at all and really pushed for the procedure).

It seems that uterine infection will affect almost one-fourth of intact females, but the death rate is less than one percent. With females, the removal of the ovaries to prevent mammary cancer seems to be the single benefit that has any real numbers behind it. Yet that would not take away the long term risks of other serious diseases caused by the procedure. It seems that a decision needs to be made on a case by case basis for the individual animal based on many factors such as gender, age, breed and environment and lifestyle. Vets should inform people of the long term health risks of these procedures and offer vasectomies and tubal ligations for those animals who need birth control but might be harmed by spaying or neutering. I hope the information will help you.
