Keeping Busy

Keeping busy is generally not that hard around here. My family is a lot of work. Tuesday was pretty productive. I got a lot of cleaning and laundry done. Since I wasn't doing well toward the end of last week, I had to put off a business call until this week. Well, I made the call. It reminds me that things could be so much worse. I started to worry a little recently because of a note I hold. Guess what? The income that pays it is safe and not effected by the current crisis. I'm so lucky and grateful to have a safe little port in a storm. We have not been effected much by the economic meltdown, but this was the one piece that could have hurt us. I have a timeline for something else that will replace that income when it is done paying out, but that's a bit down the line and I sure would not have liked to have that whole plan unravel unexpectedly. I'm not sure my husband and I could have handled a development like that right now. I'm so glad we're okay there.

I went out with the husband and kids to order Thanksgiving dinner for next week. I'm pretty sure it's a nationwide chain store - have you heard of a place called Honey Baked Ham? That's where we ordered. I decided it might be better to do that than to cook. We've ordered holiday hams from there a couple of times before, but we usually made most of the rest of the meal ourselves. I figure this will make things a bit more relaxed and it might be nicer for me since the food is pre-cooked and just needs heating. Do you know they even have nutrition information available so you can look at it before you place your order? I thought that was pretty cool. Some of that information was pretty shocking, so I'm glad I had a look for damage control purposes. :-) The desserts I ordered have 15 grams of fat per serving. The children's' first choices for dessert had a whopping 40 grams of fat per serving. Can you believe that? Like I said, I'm glad I looked. My husband is trying to lose weight and I can't even imagine the children eating that many grams of fat after a heavy meal without somebody getting sick. My youngest is eight now. I really want to be done cleaning vomit on holidays. :-) So how about you? Do you 'cheat' with any pre-cooked foods for Thanksgiving dinner?

  1. Sounds like a great idea!

I'm the queen of fast recipes so I always use short-cuts when cooking. I also have a couple of good restaurants on speed-dial, just in case.

  2. I cheat. At work we have a pot-luck Tgiv feast. I bring one dish and eat all. At Church, the church cooks. Again I eat, bring nothing. For the actual Turkey day, I bring one dish, a few drinks and con my sister into baking pies. Then we bring them to the family festivities and eat.

Honey baked ham is really good!

  3. I am glad your note is safe. We have a couple that are in jeopardy. Not big ones, thankfully.

I LOVE Honey Baked Ham. Well, I used to. I haven't checked to see if they have gluten in their glazes. But, their food is wonderful. I usually choose to cook. I love to cook and there are only the two of us so it isn't that hard. I don't get all fancy, for sure.

  4. Good restaurants on speed dial sounds perfect, Amanda.

    I like your style, Enola!
    :-)

I hope your notes end up safe, too, Tamara. I bet you could call Honey Baked Ham and someone would find out about the gluten for you. They were awfully nice about the nutrition info.

  5. I've 'cheated' in a lot of different ways. Like Enola, I've brought dinner rolls and enjoyed the entire meal. :)

I've cooked just a rolled turkey breast which was purchased ready to bake at the super market and I've bought entire dinners from several different sources. Most were adequate and WAY less work !

We usually supplement with things we feel we can't do withouth, like green bean casserole. We have a strange addiction to the cranberry sauce in the can too. Somehow, it's not Thanksgiving if the jellied cranberry doesn't have lines around it!

Whatever we do, the point is to enjoy it and each other.

  6. Hi, Jenny! Yes, the buying of the entire dinner sounded very appealing this go round. I had to laugh about the cranberry sauce in a can. Me, too!! What IS it about those lines that draw us? Hee hee.

A woman after my own heart.
Can me, Mrs K, Ben and Holly pop round for dinner too ;-)
If not, for ham, I will ditch me family and come on my own!
